CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Cold as Ice

KING MORTLOCK GRUNTED. "Let's move on, or we'll be here for a week. Morrigan, tell us everything you know about Vladislav, sweetheart. What do you remember?"

Nieven cut in. "We need to return to the kings, or we will be out of order. Morrigan can tell us about Vladislav Primul later. While the heirs are deciding about Morrigan's Fae mate, let us recap the events of Charles Blackburn for those who weren't here."

King Mortlock grunted again. "Right. Avery, how about you go over it? You seemed to know a lot of what was going on in Charles's head."

"I only know what I saw in visions and what I could glean from a surface skim while I was standing beside him," Nieven said, his silver eyes glowing by the end.

I huffed and looked up at the ceiling. I knew exactly who would have been the one to send Harvey’s dad those photos. Axel had been the tech guru. He would have been the one to set up all the cameras and security for the compound, and he hated me. He hated me before I’d even arrived.

Nieven shifted slightly in his seat and squeezed my hand again as if he was trying to prepare me for what came next. He held my hand in a fierce but not painful grip. His fingers twined with mine. His hand was warm, so warm, his long, elegant fingers smooth, his skin soft.

"Charles Blackburn lied about drinking Morrigan's blood," Nieven said. "It disgusted him that the rest of you—those who drank the shipment Morrigan had sent to the heirs—drank her blood. He felt like her blood belonged to him and him alone. He has had a house, or you might even call it a tower, built near his home on Blackburn land. He intended to lock Morrigan up with her own complement of guards to ensure she stayed there."

Elder King let out a furious hiss, his eyes back to glowing.

Nieven continued. "He sent men to Miami to trap Morrigan. He had her poisoned, but he did not know that Imre Savage got to her first." He looked at Elder King. "You made the right decision to contact the Savage Heir to find Morrigan. The others, the younger heirs, Blade Mortlock and Harvey Blackburn, would not have had the wherewithal to go to Miami to retrieve Morrigan. Imre Savage has a certain amount of independence from his father because of his age and their relationship."

I bit my lip and stared across the room. Imre had told me in Miami that his father was having him watched again. He'd been so pissed when he'd met me in Miami. I'd thought most of his anger came from the situation with me, but what if some of it had been because of his father? Was some of his rage now because of his father's actions?

I cleared my throat, a deep scowl pulling my eyebrows low. "King Blackburn could have tried to lock me up, but I'd be fucked if I stayed where he put me.
